I was asked to produce video and audio contents for this incredible tour in Iitate Village, Fukushima. I spent a couple of months in the village and it was quite magical experience. People, places food. Of course the topics of Fukushima nuclear power plant accident and the radiation contamination is inevitable for any projects in the area, but they are very positive and it was eye opening experience.
飯舘村で行われているフィールドミュージアムツアー「環世界探索紀行」のビデオとオーディオコンテンツを任されました。数ヶ月飯舘村に滞在して作品を製作しましたが、魔法のような時間を体験させてもらいました。 もちろん原発事故と放射能汚染とは切り離せない場所ではありますが、人々は前向きで僕も色々と気付かされる経験でした。

I had a privilege of getting to know this incredibly talented artist from France, Alain Quercia in Nishiaizu International Art Village. He asked me to film and edit this dance performance by Akiko Kajiwara which featured many of Alain’s sculptures he created during his residency in NIAV. Luckily, Alain liked the music I produced with Alien on Vacation and he had our music featured in the performance as well. It was such a serendipitous wonderful experience.
素晴らしいアーティスト、アラン・ケルシアさんと西会津国際芸術村にてお会いしました。アランさんが滞在中に作った作品を使った梶原暁子さんのダンスパフォーマンスを撮影・編集してほしいと要望がありましたので引き受けました。僕がAlien on Vacation と作った音楽も気に入ってもらい、パフォーマンスで使っていただきました。
In May 2024, Alain Quersia made his first visit to Japan from France and continued his research and creation as an artist-in-residence at Nishiaizu International Art Village. Inspired by Japanese mythology, folklore, and traditions of Nishiaizu, including traditional Nishiaizu washi paper, Izugahara-Gami, he created washi masks themed on "bear" and "crow" for a performance by Akiko Kajihara, a contemporary dancer residing in France, who visited Nishiaizu International Art Village on June 28. Despite having only three days after arriving at Nishiaizu International Art Village on July 1, 2024, Akiko immersed herself in the world of Alain's works and performed their first collaborative performance in 20 years. In this video, we are showcasing the performance from July 1.

2024年5月、フランスから初めて日本を訪れたアラン・ケルシアは、西会津国際芸術村の滞在アーティストとして活動を開始。日本の神話や西会津町の民話、民俗、そして伝統和紙である出ヶ原紙にインスピレーションを受け、「熊」と「烏」をモチーフにした和紙の仮面を制作した。この仮面は、フランス在住のコンテンポラリーダンサー、梶原暁子とのコラボレーション・パフォーマンスのために制作したものである。梶原は2024年6月28日に西会津国際芸術村を訪れ、わずか3日間でアランの作品の世界観に浸り、20年ぶりとなるコラボレーションパフォーマンスを披露した。

Hernandez Hideaway in "Morning After Bulgar"
Happy New Year!
Our new music video is here! Hernandez Hideaway, the band I was formally the member of, just released a new song “Morning After Bulgar” on all the music streaming platforms. Back in 2022, when I was visiting San Francisco Bay Area, we shot a music video for the tune. Special thanks to one of my oldest friend Chip Yamada for stopping by during the shoot and lending us your camera operating skills. Also my good friends like Deb Leal for showing up at our show to take fantastic 35mm film photos and also Jared Gutekunst (our longest fan) and Marcia Ong (my good filmmaker buddy) for shooting some videos on your phones. This was a fun shoot and was pleasure to edit.

Some mornings are about coaxing your aching body vertical, accompanied by melody memories of carousing and gleeful frivolity. Some mornings linger last night’s laughter and oompah at the edges of your brain even as you refill the shell of your waking self with coffee and coconut water. Some mornings are puzzles that piece together flashes of friends and celebration and the previous night’s debauchery.

「Mori no Koshikake Music & Art Festival 2023」を開催～

「森のこしかけ」の誕生経緯と主催団体
「森のこしかけ」は2022年、飯綱高原在住のカナダ人アフリン・ケイラが発起人となり、個人で資金を調達し、地元のボランティア、長野に縁のあるアーティストやミュージシャンの協力を得て初開催されました。2年目となる今年は、人種、性別、年齢に関わらず、飯綱高原という場所によってつながれ、昨年実行委員として参加したメンバーそれぞれが出資して起ち上げた労働者協同組合（以下、ワーカーズコープ）「Koshikake Events」が主催します。ワーカーズコープとは、「持続可能で活力のある地域社会の実現に資する」事を目的とする新しい法人格の団体です。ワーカーズコープによる地域おこしに特化したアウトドア・ミュージック・フェスティバルの開催は、全国初の試みです。
今年のテーマは「ヒーリング」
飯綱高原は先駆的にミュージック・セラピーの研究をし、ヒーリング・ミュージックの第一人者となった宮下富実夫氏が創作活動の拠点とした地です。今年は宮下氏の20回忌ということもあり、フェスティバルのテーマを「ヒーリング」と定め、来場者の心と体が癒される空間づくりを目指します。また、宮下氏の息子であり、飯綱高原で生まれ育ったミュージシャン、宮下ジョディ天空が音楽監督を務め、世界に通用するレベルの音楽をお届けします。

It was a fun project and I got to use excerpts from my animation that I have been working on since the pandemic. 泥の河 Muddy River: installation video/film at Masahisa Koike Exhibition
It was quite an honor to be asked to collaborate at Masahisa Koike’s Solo Exhibition Muddy River 泥の河 (Oct. 10 - Nov. 9 2022) Flat File Slash Warehouse Gallery, Nagano, Japan. It was only for one day, on November 9th, the last day of the exhibit, but Masahisa wanted me to present my work along his wonderful installation art called Muddy River. I am currently working on my new piece that features a river and I got to present this excerpt of the work in progress. 8mm film loop was projected at the one end of the gallery and two digital video screens were projected on the other. I performed live improvised music during the event but at times, I kept the music playing back on the loop. I took some videos here, so please take a moment to check this wonderful exhibit.
芸術家の小池雅久氏による、長野市のギャラリー、フラット・ファイル・スラッシュにて行われた個展、「泥の河」（10月10日〜11月9日）の最終日に、コラボ企画としてフィルムとビデオのインスタレーション、及びライブ音楽でご一緒させていただきました。私が制作中の新作も、川をテーマにしていることもあり、完成はしていないですが、一部をこちらで上映しました。８mm映像のループを映写機で投影し、対面の壁にはデジタルのプロジェクターでスクリーンを二つ投影しました。音楽は即興で一日中演奏をしていましたが、時々ループにして映像を撮影したり、休憩したり、お客様とお話をさせていただいていました。内容を簡単なビデオにまとめましたので、ご覧ください。

John Davis is a Northern California artist exploring the relationship between moving image and sound. Through live performance and studio-based projects, his work encourages sensory response through unexpected uses of traditional media.
Nao Nakazawa, originally hailing from Nagano, Japan, moved to California in 1996 to study film. First earning a BA in film & digital media from UC Santa Cruz, and later a MFA in cinema from SF State University, Nao has spent more than 25 years working on film and television productions throughout San Francisco Bay Area and Japan. Nao has been devoted to making his own films of many genres, such as documentaries, fictions and animations. For the past decade, he has been creating experimental works that feature live performances.
Silvia Turchin is a Bay Area experimental filmmaker whose work is concerned with memory and loss. Her films are experiential in style, encouraging viewers to immerse themselves in keen visual and aural observation of urban and natural landscapes.
Her films include “Summer Light for Tula”, "F-Line", "Oh Christmas Tree" and "Dogs of the 9th Ward". Silvia has screened at festivals such as Edinburgh International Film Festival, Ann Arbor, Filmfest Dresden, Mill Valley, Big Muddy, Frameline and Experiments in Cinema. She holds her MFA in Cinema from San Francisco University and has taught film production at UC Berkeley, San Francisco State University and the San Francisco Art Institute, and is currently Associate Professor in the Cinematic Arts Department at Cal State Monterey Bay.
Alien on Vacation is Hj Mooij on bass and synths, and Whatnao on violin and mandolin. These aliens love earth music of all kinds and they try to imitate what they heard while on vacation on this planet.
San Francisco Screening: Waypoints of the Light and Sound
I will be joining John Davis again for this group show at ATA (Artists Television Access) in San Francisco on July 9th, 2022.
I will be screening the piece that I did in Nishiaizu called “Gamohkan: A Collection of Lost Properties”. The piece was originally an installation piece, but for this screening, I’ll be showing all four screens, two digital, one VHS on TV, and Super 8 film roll on a film projector, and playing live music.

The actor Marissa, who invited me to collaborate on her play, The Sound and The Fury - a poetic play, earlier this year, asked me to perform live music for her live script reading of Oscar Wilde’s Salomé. This is a part of a theater festival called Festa Matsumoto. Marissa has written wonderful script based on Wilde’s and gave a little twist and her own interpretation on this classical tale.
今年の春に、「詩劇 響きと怒り」でのコラボレーションに誘ってくれた、俳優で演出家の万里紗さんに、再びお誘いいただきました。今回はオスカー・ワイルドの「サロメ」で、フェスタ松本２０２１にて上演します。彼女の書いた台本のリーディングと、私の音楽のコラボレーションです。聖書にも出てくる古典的なストーリーを、ワイルドの原作をベースに、彼女独自の解釈も織り込んで、とても素敵な台本になっています。
I AM FLOWER PROJECT
「草木をまとって、やまのかみさま」

I had privilege to be a part of I AM FLOWER PROJECT produced by Nishiaizu International Art Village. This event marks 8th year, although it was cancelled last year due to the pandemic. In this event, performers were decorated with flowers and plants by ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement) master, Atsunobu Katagiri and perform theatrical play featuring live music on the traditional stage at Oyamazumi Shrine in Nishiaizu. I played violin and edited this video documentation.
光栄なことに、西会津国際芸術村主催のイベント、「草木をまとって山のかみさま」に参加させてもらいました。去年はコロナ禍のため中止になりましたが、8年目になる新しいお祭り。華道家、片桐功敦さん（花道みささぎ流家元）によって、参加者の体に花を生けてもらい、大山祇神社の神楽殿にてパフォーマンスをするイベント。私はバイオリンでの参加、そして映像の編集をさせてもらいました。

I got a call from Marissa, a star of Hisayasu Sato’s THE EYES DREAM in March of 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic was beginning to devastate the world and she asked me to take a part in her play production based on William Faulkner’s THE SOUND AND THE FURY. Not only because all of my production work was canceled due to the pandemic and I had no plan for the coming year, but also it sounded like a fascinating project, so I accepted the offer although I have not had previous experience working on a play production.
Marissa asked me to produce video that would be projected during the play as well as being on the stage and play live music. We had a nice shoot in Togakushi, Nagano back in last October with Marissa and her brother Jin. Jin has Down syndrome and according to Marissa, Jin suggested to do a play production together with Marissa. She thought it would be interesting to make The Sound and The Fury into a play and have him also star in a moving image on stage.
During the year of 2020, we had several online discussions with the cast and crew of the production as well as special guests about the literature, history and social issues and discrimination surrounding disabilities. We also had art and dance workshops in person. These workshops helped us to tackle this difficult novel and develop into a play.
For almost a month the cast and crew stayed at Nishiaizu International Art Village and rehearsed intensively. Next week, we will be heading for the performances starting February 11th to 14th at Subterranean Theater in Tokyo. We will also be reunited to perform in Karuizawa and Nishiaizu in May.
演劇に初挑戦しています。佐藤寿保監督の映画、『眼球の夢』の現場を『カニバ』のルシアンとヴェレナと共に取材した際に知り合った、主演を務めていた万里紗さんからオファーがあり、引き受けました。作品は、ウィリアム・フォークナーの『響きと怒り』を元に、万里紗さんが主演・脚本・演出をする『詩劇 響きと怒り』です。僕は、劇中で使われる映像と音楽の制作、そして出演者として舞台上でのライブ音楽を任されました。

夜の銀河鉄道 The Galactic Railroad at Night - a location specific play
During my residency at NIAV in the fall of 2020, I also got to work with a play production director Yuuki Nomiya on the location specific play production of NIGHT ON THE GALACTIC RAILROAD (Oct. 31 ~ Nov. 22, 2020) as a musician. As the guest arrived at Nozawa station and welcomed into this play, I would play violin. It was a lot of fun to be a character in this unique play production. I also filmed and edited the video of the event which is featured at the ongoing archive gallery at Nishiaizu International Art Village and will be there until March 28.
西会津国際芸術村での滞在中には、同時期に行われていた、体験型シアター「銀河鉄道の夜」(10/31~11/22/2020) にも出演させてもらいました。お客様が野沢駅に到着し、演劇が始まり、野沢の街にくりだす際、僕がバイオリンを演奏する、街の変わり者の役として参加させてもらいました。西会津国際芸術村にて現在行われている、アーカイブ展では私が撮影し、編集したビデオが展示されています。展示は3月28日まで。

GAMOH-KAN - A Collection of Lost Properties
An installation film/video at Nishiaizu International Art Village
I was invited to Nishiaizu International Art Village (NIAV) for artist residency and with their help, I got to produce an installation piece GAMOH-KAN at their gallery Gamoh-kan.
I collected objects and photos around the town of Nishiaizu which is a remote town in Fukushima prefecture. Also I had access to ancient pottery pieces that are excavated in Nishiaizu. They are from approximately 3rd century BC. Then I filmed all the objects in the same style using 8mm film and video. In the installation, I used a film projector, TV and two digital projections. The gallery is in the building which use to be a ryokan ( Japanese style inn) and in the back of the gallery, the owner left many of the items that belonged to his deceased parents. I had the permission to use these item to decorate the gallery and make the space to look similar to what it use to be when the family lived there.
Along with the video projection, the collected items and decoration, I set up a stage for myself and other musicians to come in and perform improvised music during the hours for the gallery. It was open for six days a week for three weeks. During this period, NIAV hosted a location specific play production of NIGHT ON THE GALACTIC RAILROAD directed by Yuuki Nomiya, and this gallery was used in this production as well.
西会津国際芸術村に滞在し、芸術村が運営するギャラリー蒲生館にて、インスタレーションを制作しました。西会津の、あるご家庭の蔵や、廃家、そして元時計店などを訪れて、いろいろなアイテムや写真を集め、それらを8mmフィルムとデジタルカメラで撮影しました。そして西会津で発掘された縄文土器も撮影させてもらいました。そして編集したものを、ギャラリーにて、８mmフィルムの映写機、ブラウン管テレビ、デジタルプロジェクターなどを使い、４画面での作品になりました。
ギャラリーは元旅館だった場所で、そこに住んでいたご家族は今はいませんが、生活に使われていた家具や、多くの物、そして遺影がギャラリーの裏に多く残されていましたので、オーナーの許可をもらい、ギャラリーに生活感のある空間を再現しました。そして、ギャラリーでは、音楽をライブ演奏できるようにもセッティングしてあり、週6日、3週間の展示期間中、毎日ライブ演奏をしました。展示期間中は、NIAV主催、野宮有姫演出の体験型シアター「銀河鉄道の夜」も並行して行われており、蒲生館もこのシアターに使用されました。
HERE AND NOW, vol. 2 at ATA, SAN FRANCISCO
I had a privilege to put together a show at ATA, San Francisco, with John Davis. Along my film, I performed live music accompaniment with Alien on Vacation partner, Hj Mooij. We had full house show. I presented my work titled Dark Cinema in which the digital projector was dimmed by layers of ND filters to make the image very dark and very difficult to see. I also had permission to make the theater as dark as possible, covering all the light sources.
Back in 2014, I had a show at ATA which was planned to share the screen with John Davis and late Paul Clipson. On the day of the show, John fell ill and had to cancel. Paul and I had a wonderful show and we promised we will have a show together again with John. However, Paul passed and having the show with all three of us never happened. This was bitter sweet first show with John and Paul was with us in spirit.
光栄なことに、サンフランシスコのATAにて、ジョン・デイビスと共に、上映会を行いました。僕の作品には、エイリアン・オン・バケーションの音楽パートナー、Hj Mooijと共にライブ演奏を行いました。作品は「ダーク・シネマ」という作品で、会場内を完全に暗転し、プロジェクターのレンズの前にフィルターを被せて、極力映る映像を暗くして何が写ってるのかはっきりしない状態の映像作品でした。
Caniba by Verena Paravel & Lucien Castaing-Taylor receives Special Orrizonti Jury Award at La Biennale di Venezia
Caniba, the film I helped to produce was premiered at the 2017 Venice International Film Festival received Special Jury Award in Orizzonti competition. I had a great privilege to work with Verena and Lucien on this highly controversial documentary film which is a portrait of Issei Sagawa, an infamous cannibal who murdered and ate a young Dutch student back in 1981 in Paris. During the filming, I was working as a sound recordist, translator, and associate producer and remained as a collaborator during early stages of editing.
The film also had the North American premier at Toronto International Film Festival. I was lucky to join these directors at both festivals. Naturally, the film is a difficult one to watch and critics are divided, but I'm proud to be a part of this project which I consider it to be a monumental achievement in cinema.
私が製作に関わったヴェレナ・パラヴェルとルーシャン・キャステーヌ＝テイラー監督らによる、佐川一政のポートレートドキュメンタリー映画「カニバ」が、2017年ベネチア映画祭のオリゾンティ部門で審査員特別賞を受賞しました。撮影では、音声、通訳、アソシエート・プロデューサーだったほか、編集の初期段階でも関わらせていただきました。
